Gallery Masters: Art Appreciation for Children, Ages 6-8

In this class students will become familiar with the elements of art and recognizing them in the art they view during class visits either to the HCAF Gallery or through books & videos.

Through age-appropriate activities, students will be given challenges in critical thinking and communication.  Then exercise their individual creativity in completing a project in each class session.

This class is specifically designed for your young, budding artist! Students will engage in age-appropriate lessons that challenge and inspire their own unique style. Through group discussions and observation students will be  encouraged to build upon their basic understanding of the elements and principles of art and how these come together in their own original piece of art.

Plein Air Painting with DIY Cigar Box Pochade Workshop

Using a cigar box and a minimal amount of supplies, I’ll show how to build a simple outdoor painting box that can be kept in your car or on your bicycle for when inspiration arrives. They work best for small 4”x 6”, 5”x 7”, or 6”x 8” panels.

Bring a lawn chair and your preferred Art medium, because we will put the box to use in the field, weather conditions permitting.

$20 material fee paid to instructor at the time of class.

Adult Dance: A Little Bit of Everything

A Little Bit of Everything is an adult dance course that offers a course where dancers will learn a variety of styles and genres of dance. the 12 week course will be split into 4, 3 week sections, ballet, jazz and hip hop, modern, and then swing. A course perfect for beginners and more advanced dancers alike. Learn fun dance moves and get active and healthy at the same time.  For ages 18+

Memoir Writing: Telling Your Story

Three Week Series

Dates: November 28th & 30th, December 5th & 7th, December 12th & 14th

In this memoir writing class the focus will be on an introduction to memoir writing, the primary aspects and concepts needed to do memoir writing and writing generally, some in-depth discussion about the conflicts and complexities one encounters with writing memoir, and many tips and tricks to help you write successfully and consistently even after the course. In the first week you will come up with a topic and a way you want to write about it. Then we will discuss the finer points of memoir writing, how to dig deeply into yourself, how to perform the necessary research, and how to deal with common issues people have when writing memoir. The course ends with discussion of the importance of critique to writers, how to provide helpful feedback, and how to keep your writing going into the future. This course will have weekly reading, group activities, time for writing, and is centered in group discussion.

Wheel Throwing for Beginners

This course is designed for the beginner who has no previous experience in throwing ceramics on the wheel.  Each student will have their own wheel along with 25-lbs of clay and a package of tools to perform all the class assignments.  Such assignments include throwing: bowls, vases, cups, plates, tall and short cylinders along with misc. objects to be determined by the class.

Broadway Choreography- Beginner and Intermediate

For kids age 6 to 17!  12 sessions where students will learn the basics of dance and choreography.  Classes meet once a week on Wednesdays, 6 PM-7:30 PM.  The last session will be a free performance so parents and friends can see what the students have learned.  This class is appropriate for both kids who took the first session and those who have not.

About the instructor: Rachel is a longtime professional dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer.  She is trained in various forms of dance, including ballet, jazz, swing, modern, and lyrical.  She began her dance education at the age of three and participated in classes, training, and performance growing up in a family-owned ballet and dance school.  

Introduction to Eco-printing

Artist Stephanie Shroyer will introduce you to the basic process of bundling and steaming prepared surfaces of a t-shirt, silk scarf and watercolor paper with leaves and flowers found in your yard and garden, allowing the pigment of them to bond together leaving a lasting impression! We will work with both cellulose /cotton and protein fibers/silk. And discuss the difference in preparation for each.

 Not all leaves work for this process. A list of good “printers will be provided once registered so students can begin collecting and storing material to use. Instructions on how to preserve them will be included. We will reconstitute them in warm water before using them.

The artist will bring a host of materials to work with as well.

We will learn how to use tannins, and metal salts to mordant the materials to alter the outcome and try using dye blankets to add color from natural dyes.

$35 material fee paid to instructor at the time of class.  

This will cover the cost of the T-shirt, the silk scarf, the watercolor, paper, and mordants and dyes. And other disposable supplies.
