The first day of the workshop I will demonstrate landscape painting with pastel.  In the demonstration, I will illustrate the very principles and techniques that I use in my own art.  These include: how to use a simple palette to establish color harmony and a recipe for exciting color. In the demonstration, I will show how to mass shapes and how to unify techniques in a painting.  I will also illustrate how to use the idea of screens to paint objects that are made up of many small piece, such as winter trees.  I will use the demonstration as an opportunity to introduce three basic types of compositions, as well as, the idea of an organizal shape.  In the afternoon, students will begin work on their own paintings.

Each of the following days the class will begin with a short presentation.  I will use these presentations to illustrate other painting principles such as: the use of black and white thumbnails and color thumbnails; different approaches to under-painting with color, how to separate landscape into foreground and background planes, and how to use the edges to suggest texture.   How to find color solutions as you paint.

This is a mixed media class, so students will have their choice of working with standard mosaic tile, Stained glass, junk, jewelry, rocks and shells, China dishes, mirror, beads and a lot more! They will learn the various adhesives to use for each application and tessarae.

Students will select from square, circle, and rectangle shapes.  These can be cut down to other shapes if needed.  Wall art, address plaques, wall planters using china cups, tabletops and mirrors are among the things they can create.
